Saint Anthony of Lisbon, baptized as Fernando de Bulhões, was born in Lisbon in 1195 and died in Padua (Italy) on 13 June 1231, is also known as Saint Anthony of Padua.
The procession, in honour of the saint, is one of the most popular in the city, if not the most popular. The procession dates back to the 16th century, is an initiative of the guild of the crockery makers (whose patron was this Franciscan saint), having, since de beginning, been patronised by the Municipality and the population of the city.
Beginning and ending in the Church of Santo António, the procession passes through the Cathedral, runs through the narrow streets and alleys of the neighbourhood of Alfama, where the portable platforms of the patron saints of the local churches are integrated.
